Linguistics , as a definition , is the scientific study of language. It encompasses the description of languages , the study of their origin , and the analysis of how children acquire language and how people learn language other than their own .

To speak of " foreign language " , is to speak of a non – native language taught in a school that has no status as a routine medium of communication in that country . Moreover , a foreign language is a language not spoken by the indigenous people of a certain place. Its also a language not spoken in the native country of the person who learns it; for example , " English " is a foreign language in " Japan", while "Japanese" is a second language to the English speaker who lives in Japan. Learning a foreign language consists of a variety of skills ; the ability to speak , comprehend , read and write , and each of these requires a subset of passive or active abilities : knowledge of vocabulary , the command of grammatical structures , understanding of cultural contexts in which language appears . For this reason , it is helpful to practice language in various ways . Besides , none of these skills exits in isolation . Practicing and improving the ability in one set of skills can also promote language learning in the other areas . Learning a foreign language can be described either as positive or negative aspect . Considering the first aspect to answer the question :" why do we learn a foreign language ? " is the reflection of various reasonable situations and cases . First of all , sharp cognition and life skills; because learning a language involves a variety of learning skills , studying a foreign language can enhance one's ability to learn and function in several other areas . Children who have studied a language at the elementary level score higher on tests in reading language arts and math . People who have learned foreign languages show greater cognitive development in areas such as mental flexibility , creativity , and higher orders thinking skills , such as problem – solving , conceptualizing and reasoning . In addition to cognitive benefits , the study of foreign languages leads to the acquisition of some important life skills . Because language learners learn to deal with unfamiliar cultural ideas , they are much better equipped toadopt fast-changing world . Moreover , chances of entry into collage or graduate school :Today , most colleges and universities require a minimum of two years of high school foreign language instruction for admission . The majority of universities rightly consider knowledge of a foreign language and culture part of what every educated person should know. Many majors in the arts and humanities in natural sciences and behavioral and social sciences , also require the study of one or more languages to ensure success in the given field . Furthermore , many other factorsmotivate some group of people for FLL , such as : *Emigration : when you move to a different country , learning the local language will help you to communicate and integrate with the local community . *Family and friends : if your partner , in –laws , relatives or friends speak a different language , learning that language will help you to communicate with them .*Work : if your work involves regular contact with speakers of foreign languages , being able to talk to them in their own languages being able to talk to them in their own languages will help you to communicate with them . Also , knowledge of foreign languages may increase your chances of finding a new job getting a promotion or a transfer overseas , or of going on foreign business trips .*Secret communication : if you and some of your relatives , friends or colleagues speak a language that few people understand , you can talk freely in public without fear of anyone eavesdropping , and at the same time , you can keep any written material secret .Many other minor reasons ; travel, study and research , culture , global understanding , studying abroad and others can be added to those major positive aspects of learning a foreign language . On the other hand, learning a foreign languageas anegative aspecthas been described as" nasty , brutish and long " . There are a huge number of people who speak a dozen language , but no one speaks like a native unless they are native speakers , and the other group , or the rest, spend years learning a language, and still wind up with bad grammar and accent . That's why , this phenomenon does not cultivate this group of people to learn a foreign language . Moreover , like other nationalities , Americans have often felt an urge to expel the language of the enemy . During the First World War, German language schools were shut down . Throughout the more recent Cold War , Russian Studies professors were frequently the target of McCarthyist persecutions . To learn the language of the enemy is often seen as a sign of surrender . Hypothetical defeats are often alluded to linguistic terms . " if the war had been lost , we would all be speaking German ,Russian , etc. ". Also , this kind of people finds that learning languages is too hard , they will never use it , they can get good jobs without a knowledge of this foreign language , and the study of this language is boring and takes too long time to learn . On the other side for scholars , for instance , the knowledge of the conventions , customs , beliefs and systems of meaning of another country , is indisputably an integral part of foreign language learning , and many teachers have seen it as their goal to incorporate the teaching of culture into the foreign language curriculum . At any rate , foreign language learning is foreign culture learning , and in one form or another , culture has been taught in the foreign language classroom , for different reasons . English , for example , can be taught as a foreign language for many various reasons . *It is the international and global language in the world , nowadays .*It is the language of computers and internet *It is the common language of airports , hotels and restaurants . *It is the language of the famous international writers' books .*It is the way and the chance of good work opportunities with good salaries . Also , French as FLL illustrates the following facts : 200 million people speak French in 43 countries .**International language of cuisine , fashion , personal car products , architecture , art , theatre and dance .*Both an official and working language of U.N *Second language of the internet . *Official language of the European Union . Most schools around the world teach at least one foreign language . On average in Europe , at the start of foreign language teaching , learners have lessons for three to four hours a week . Compulsory lessons in a foreign language normally start at the end of primary school or the start of secondary school . In Luxembourg , Norway , and Malta , however , the first foreign language is studied at age six , and in Belgium at age 10 . Despite the high rate of foreign language teaching in schools , the number of adults claiming to speak a foreign language is generally lower than might be expected . This is particularly true of native English speakers . In 2004 a British survey showed that only one in 10 UK workers would speak a foreign language less than 5% could count to 20 in a foreign language . In 2001 , a European commission survey found that 65.9% of people in U K spoke only their native language . Finally , after this explanation , it is possible to display the aspect of foreign language learning ( FLL ) as a useful and serious domain in our personality as a whole , despite the fact that many groups of people deal with it as an offensive and unpleasant phenomenon .
